I know this is not exactly what you are asking for, but for my day hikes I use my iPhone running the Motion-X GPS app. This really sucks the battery juice, so I bought a solar-power battery case that will last about a day and a half (running GPS) if necessary. And I carry a small Ziploc baggy for the iPhone in case of rain. I don’t hike by myself, but if I did, I would get one of those new relatively inexpensive satellite phones. I think they’re in the $ 300 range.
